Myths about IPL / Laser Hair Removal

IPL / laser hair removal is the easiest and most effective way to get rid of all the unwanted hair in your body. As this treatment are still relatively new, there are many myths and misconceptions about it.
In this article we try to approach most of the myths and facts about IPL / laser hair removal. Please feel free to leave a comment if you need an answer to other questions about IPL / laser hair removal.

Fact: It is recommended not to tan before treatments.

Tanning and IPL / laser hair removal are not compatible. Tanning before or after your treatments could cause hyper or hypo pigmentation. Also, tanning prior to the procedure will require lowing settings, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds 4 to 6 weeks prior to treatments will be the recommended option.

Myth: IPL / laser hair removal is not effective
Contrary to the statements of those unfamiliar with this technology, IPL / laser hair removal is very effective when properly performed for the majority of candidates. Non-responders are usually limited to people with white, gray, blond or red hair or people with hormonal problems.

Fact: Experience is important

A technician with experience is crucial in selecting the proper IPL / laser setting for each skin type. Technician with no experience could select setting that are too low and make the treatment less effective. Or, they could choose setting that are too high and could cause side effects.

Myth: IPL / Laser hair removal is not safe

IPL / laser hair removal uses technology that targets the pigment in the hair leaving the skin and surrounding tissue unharmed. Studies have shown that there are no long term adverse affects of the procedure.

Fact: People with dark skin can get results

With recent advances in the science of IPL / laser hair removal, equipment has been developed. The darker the skin color, the more difficult it is to obtain results from IPL / laser hair removal. This does not mean that people with dark skin can’t get good results. They should understand that it would require more treatments than the average (4 to 6 sessions). People with dark skin can have safe and effective treatments. But they need to make sure they choose a medical spa with the right technology for their skin type.

Myth: Shaving makes the hair grow thicker

Shaving the hair does not change its thickness or color. The color, location, thickness and length of hair on your body mainly depend on genetics and hormones. After you shave body hair, it may feel coarse or stubbly for a time as it grows out. During this phase, it may be more noticeable and may appear darker or thicker. But it’s not.

Fact: Light hair is not treatable

People that have blond, red, gray or white should not have IPL / laser hair removal. This technology is attracted to the pigment in the hair. There is not enough pigment on blond, red, white or gray hair that will guarantee an effective treatment. People with dark blond or light brown hair can obtain a reduction but it would take more than the average number treatments (4 to 6 sessions).

Myth: IPL / laser hair removal is very painful

Many clients describe the sensation as a slight tingling or stinging sensation. It is an uncomfortable but not a painful feeling. You can expect to feel a mild rubber band pop or a mild pinch. Most of who have experienced the three main commercial methods of hair removal describe waxing and electrolysis as much more painful than IPL / laser hair removal.

Fact: It is impossible to guarantee results

It is impossible to predict the exact result a patient will achieve with IPL / laser hair removal, especially with regard to how many sessions a given individual will require. The results will depend on the color of your skin and the thickness and color or your hair. Following pre care instructions is also very important.

IPL / laser hair removal and the hair follicle

The hair follicle consists of the hair bulb, hair shaft, hair bulge, and stem cells located in the bulge area. Photoepilation utilizes light to cause thermal or mechanical damage to the hair follicle structure. Simply damaging the hair bulb only delays hair regrowth; for permanent hair reduction, it is important to damage the stem cells located in the bulge area of the follicle.

Melanin is the chromophore for hair removal. The hair matrix in the hair bulb and the hair shaft have the highest concentrations of melanin and are the principle targets. Although stem cells do not have pigment that effectively absorbs light, the stem cells can be destroyed by heat diffusion from the matrix cells and hair shaft.

The Palomar StarLux System’s indications for use are based upon the selective absorption of emitted light by natural chromophores, including melanin, hemoglobin, and water. For hair removal, the melanin in hair follicles is targeted by selecting a handpiece that emits wavelengths corresponding to those absorbed by melanin.

Using the Palomar StarLux handpieces at a short pulse duration, light energy is quickly deliveredand absorbed by the hair matrix and hair shaft. This quick delivery results in damaging the hair bulb and some effect on the stem cells. A longer pulse duration,e.g., delivers the light energy over a longer period of time allowing for more thermal diffusion and potentially more damage to the stem cells.

Necessary care after IPL / laser hair removal treatment

IPL / Laser hair removal, although it is a simple process, does require proper care of the skin in the area that was treated. Generally there is little recovery time needed regarding IPL / Laser hair removal procedures. People can usually return to normal activities immediately after treatment. However, it is important to take the time to follow the recommended guidelines for aftercare in order to protect against any chance of a complication and to reduce any discomfort that may be experienced.

Immediately after the IPL / Laser hair removal treatments, there should be redness and bumps at the treatment area, which may last up to 2 hours or longer. It is normal for the treated area to feel like a sunburn for a few hours. Some physicians recommend aloe vera gel or some other after-sunburn treatment such as Desitin. Darker pigmented people may have more discomfort than lighter skin people and may require the aloe vera gel or an antibiotic ointment longer.
Makeup may be used after the IPL / Laser hair removal treatment, unless there is epidermal blistering. It is recommended to use new makeup to reduce the possibility of infection. Just make sure that you have moisturizer on under your makeup. In fact, moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area. Any moisturizer without alphahydroxy acids will work.
Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of dark or light spots for 1 month. Use sunscreen SPF 30 or higher at all times throughout the treatment.
Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin. DO NOT USE any other hair removal methods or products on the treated area during the course of your IPL / Laser hair removal treatments, as it will prevent you from achieving your best results.
You may shower after the IPL / Laser hair removal treatments, and use soap, deodorant, etc. The treated area may be washed gently with a mild soap. Skin should be patted dry and NOT rubbed. Underarm areas, that have been treated, should be wiped with alcohol for 24 hours. You may apply deodorant after 24 hours. Wait two (2) days before shaving treated areas.
Anywhere from 5-30 days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You can help the hair exfoliate by washing or wiping with a washcloth.
Hair re-growth occurs at different rates on different areas of the body. New hair growth will not occur for at least three weeks after treatment.
Call your physician’s office with any questions or concerns you may have after the treatment.

Please note: Stubble, representing dead hair being shed from the hair follicle, will appear 5-30 days after the treatment date. This is normal and will fall out quickly.
