Myths about IPL / Laser Hair Removal

IPL / laser hair removal is the easiest and most effective way to get rid of all the unwanted hair in your body. As this treatment are still relatively new, there are many myths and misconceptions about it.

Fact: It is recommended not to tan before treatments.

Tanning and IPL / laser hair removal are not compatible. Tanning before or after your treatments could cause hyper or hypo pigmentation. Also, tanning prior to the procedure will require lowing settings, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds 4 to 6 weeks prior to treatments will be the recommended option.

Myth: IPL / laser hair removal is not effective
Contrary to the statements of those unfamiliar with this technology, IPL / laser hair removal is very effective when properly performed for the majority of candidates. Non-responders are usually limited to people with white, gray, blond or red hair or people with hormonal problems.

Fact: Experience is important

A technician with experience is crucial in selecting the proper IPL / laser setting for each skin type. Technician with no experience could select setting that are too low and make the treatment less effective. Or, they could choose setting that are too high and could cause side effects.

Myth: IPL / Laser hair removal is not safe

IPL / laser hair removal uses technology that targets the pigment in the hair leaving the skin and surrounding tissue unharmed. Studies have shown that there are no long term adverse affects of the procedure.

Fact: People with dark skin can get results

With recent advances in the science of IPL / laser hair removal, equipment has been developed. The darker the skin color, the more difficult it is to obtain results from IPL / laser hair removal. This does not mean that people with dark skin can’t get good results. They should understand that it would require more treatments than the average (4 to 6 sessions). People with dark skin can have safe and effective treatments. But they need to make sure they choose a medical spa with the right technology for their skin type.

Myth: Shaving makes the hair grow thicker

Shaving the hair does not change its thickness or color. The color, location, thickness and length of hair on your body mainly depend on genetics and hormones. After you shave body hair, it may feel coarse or stubbly for a time as it grows out. During this phase, it may be more noticeable and may appear darker or thicker. But it’s not.

Fact: Light hair is not treatable

People that have blond, red, gray or white should not have IPL / laser hair removal. This technology is attracted to the pigment in the hair. There is not enough pigment on blond, red, white or gray hair that will guarantee an effective treatment. People with dark blond or light brown hair can obtain a reduction but it would take more than the average number treatments (4 to 6 sessions).

Myth: IPL / laser hair removal is very painful

Many clients describe the sensation as a slight tingling or stinging sensation. It is an uncomfortable but not a painful feeling. You can expect to feel a mild rubber band pop or a mild pinch. Most of who have experienced the three main commercial methods of hair removal describe waxing and electrolysis as much more painful than IPL / laser hair removal.

Fact: It is impossible to guarantee results

It is impossible to predict the exact result a patient will achieve with IPL / laser hair removal, especially with regard to how many sessions a given individual will require.
